You’ve gone Halloween costume shopping with your child, and he has rejected them all. They are too tight or too loose. The fabric is too itchy. They feel too hot.
If you have a kid who has sensory processing disorder or a kid who prefers comfort over style, a traditional polyester store bought Halloween costume may not work. A costume made from a soft cotton t’shirt and elastic banded leggings or sweat pants might be the best solution for your child. If your child wants to dress up as a monster, this is a perfectly comfortable option for her. Don’t worry if you can’t operate a sewing machine because this is a no-sew costume.
Your child may have strong opinions about what her costume should look like. Ask your child to draw a picture of what she would like her monster to look like.
- plain shirt
- no sew adhesive strips
- fabric paint
Steps to Make Monster Shirt
- Using felt or other fabric, cut out shapes you want to use for eyes, mouth, and teeth. Anything goes because it’s a monster!
- Arrange shapes out on t-shirt to figure out the design you would like. Your child can help do this step.
- Cut out adhesive strips and iron the shapes onto the t-shirt. The adhesive strips package should have specific directions. If you sew, sew on shapes.
- Using fabric paint, create eyelashes for your monster.
